We’re backing the UK’s Clean Air Day this month by offering free advice to companies wishing to provide staff and customers with cleaner indoor air (June 20, 2024).
Outdoor air pollution plays a significant role in indoor air quality (IAQ) and this is why we’re supporting Clean Air Day to help raise awareness.
Impact on health
Jason Day, our LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) Division Manager, explains: “Although we all spend around 90% of our time indoors – working, resting and playing – we’re not immune from the contaminates that are swirling around outdoors. Every time you open a window, door or ventilation slot, there’s continuous air exchange between the outdoors and the building you’re in.
“Many studies have proven that particulate matter (PM) impacts on us and our health and wellbeing more than any other form of pollutant. Indoor air exposure to fine PM originates mostly from outdoor air, especially in urban areas where traffic can be heavy.
Exposure in polluted areas
“What is often not acknowledged is that in strongly polluted areas – e.g. heavy industry zones, city centres with heavy traffic – without air filtration, more than 90% of ambient PM levels monitored outdoors, occur indoors too.
“Applying correctly selected, efficient air filters in ventilation systems can significantly reduce the impact of PM exposure and the burden of disease (BoD), which is a measure of life expectancy and the quality of life you can expect.
Improve air quality
“We’re offering firms who use air filters a free, no obligation to buy, energy saving survey to find out how they can save energy, which is good for the planet, as well as their finances, while also showing them how they can improve their air filtration.
“Thus, protecting their teams and customers, or patients, from air pollution and other potentially harmful, airborne particles while indoors.”
About Clean Air Day
Run by Global Action Plan, Clean Air Day is the UK’s largest awareness campaign highlighting the need to tackle air pollution. This annual event offers a chance for people to find out more about air pollution, share information, and make air cleaner and healthier for everyone.
Jason adds: “Our work covers the improvement of internal air quality but we’re naturally very keen to see improvements in overall air quality and a reduction in pollution. The Clean Air Day website states how air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK each year. It’s the largest environmental health risk we face today and is recognised as such by the World Health Organisation and the Government.

“Research has shown there are huge links between external and internal air quality and there’s a strong connection with Clean Air Day and what we do and our mantra, which is: Clean Air Matters. We’re a family run business and a large employer in this area, and at our other site in Waterlooville in Hampshire, as well as in Europe. We care about our planet, our families and each other.
Get good indoor air hygiene
“As well as cleaning up the air outside, it’s also vital to protect our health by ensuring the air within buildings is as clean as possible too.
“Retailers, employers with office-based teams, those in hospitality and catering, anyone who has personnel working together inside, or welcomes customers into their building, all need to maintain good indoor air hygiene.”
